One very hot day a few years ago, I was sitting
in my small apartment doggedly resisting the
attempts of two Christians to proselyte me.
Suddenly our ears were assaulted by a vehement stream of
profanity and the slamming of my kitchen screen door.
Tim Curry, also a friend but most definitely not a Christian,
burst in threatening violence against our city's protective
establishment. "I hate em'. I'm gonna kill those PIGS!"
My first reaction was to think to myself "When will he ever learn to knock!"
One of my Christian friends reacted differently. She went up
to Timothy as he stood there breathing fire and gnashing his teeth
and said "Now brother, you just need to calm down. Don't you know
Jesus can handle all your problems." Tim just looked at her in
shock and I thought to myself "Sure".
On July 1, 1973, I was still in my small apartment, but this time
I was preparing to go out for the evening. I had finally to attend
my friends' meeting place on the condition that they would
thereafter abandon théier pursuit. Suddenly there loomed
a large figure at my kitchen screen door. It was Tim Curry and
he knocked! Since I was getting ready to go to church, I really
didn't want him to take up my time, so I grudgingly said "come in".
He walked past me into the living room, slumped down on the sofa,
put his chin in his hands, stared at the floor and sighed. I could tell
something was wrong.I felt stirrings within me remotely akin to
compassion, so I asked "Hey, what's bugging' you?" He heaved
another sigh and said "You know, my life is just goin' nowhere
an' I don't know how to stop it. Nobody want me to sing with 'em 'n
I can't do nothin' else.I'm just feline' real bad." He did look quite
pitiful so I said "Well, my sister and I are going to this church tonight.
You want to go, too?" He looked up at me with his sad eyes and said
"Yeah…..I'll go with ya'!"
"And when he had consulted with people, he appointed singers
unto the Lord, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as
they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the Lord; for
His mercy endureth forever."
